In cases of deficiency, blood levels of pyruvate and lactate increase, affecting the body's energy supply; poultry and young animals may develop polyneuritis, myocardial dysfunction, indigestion, and growth retardation.
Vitamin B₁ is absorbed in the intestine via passive diffusion and active transport, transported via the blood to tissues, and bound to carrier proteins. It is typically found in higher concentrations in metabolically active organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, and brain, though in pigs, higher levels are found in muscle tissue.
